Background of the study

Visual narratives on social media have introduced innovative ways to communicate complex ideas. Instagram Story captions, often accompanying dynamic visual content, represent a convergence of visual and textual storytelling. In Nigeria, these captions are evolving to reflect both traditional linguistic structures and contemporary creative expressions. Users craft captions that blend conventional morphosyntactic forms with non standard constructions, often influenced by the visual content they describe (Ibrahim, 2023). This synthesis of image and text leads to unique morphosyntactic patterns that deviate from established norms while simultaneously enriching the expressive potential of language. The study examines how visual narratives in Instagram Story captions influence Nigerian morphosyntax, exploring the interplay between digital imagery and language innovation. By analyzing the grammatical and structural elements of these captions, the research aims to identify the factors driving morphosyntactic change and understand the broader implications for digital communication and cultural expression (Obi, 2024). The findings are expected to contribute to theoretical models of language change and offer practical insights for educators and content creators navigating the evolving digital landscape.

Statement of the problem

Although visual narratives have transformed digital communication, there is limited research on how Instagram Story captions affect morphosyntactic patterns in Nigeria. Existing studies typically focus on visual content or traditional text independently, neglecting the hybrid form that emerges when image and text converge. This gap in research restricts our understanding of how visual context drives modifications in sentence structure and word formation. Without adequate analysis of these phenomena, educators and language theorists lack the tools to address evolving linguistic practices in digital media (Afolabi, 2023). This study seeks to address these deficiencies by investigating the morphosyntactic effects of visual narratives in Instagram Story captions.

Objectives of the study

1. To analyze the morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian Instagram Story captions.

2. To assess the impact of visual narratives on these linguistic structures.

3. To propose recommendations for integrating digital narrative trends into language education.

Research questions

1. How do Instagram Story captions exhibit morphosyntactic variation?

2. What is the influence of accompanying visual narratives on these variations?

3. How can these findings inform theories of digital language change?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it investigates the effect of visual narratives on Nigerian morphosyntax through Instagram Story captions. By revealing how visual content influences textual structures, the research offers new insights into digital communication and language evolution. The findings will contribute to theoretical advancements and practical approaches in language education and digital media studies (Emeka, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing Instagram Story captions by Nigerian users, excluding other social media formats and offline narrative practices.

Definitions of terms

• Morphosyntax: The study of word formation and sentence structure.

• Visual Narratives: Storytelling techniques that combine images and text.

• Instagram Story Captions: Textual descriptions accompanying visual content in Instagram Stories.
